Chatham Islands Trip

First to see the 5ooth Anniversary

The Lutheran story in New Zealand began in the far easterly Chatham Islands. The 500th anniversary year of the Reformation (2017) offers a wonderful opportunity for a commemoration in the context of the Lutheran Church of New Zealand and the international celebrations of the worldwide spread of Lutheranism.

On 1 January 2017, join New Zealand Lutherans on the remote Chatham Islands. You will be the first Lutherans in the world to watch the sun rise on the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation. The dawn service will be held at the location of the first Lutheran mission in New Zealand, at the north-eastern tip of the Chatham Islands (Rekohu Wharekauri).

‘You are invited to be there with us’, says LCNZ Bishop Mark Whitfield, ‘as we begin a whole year of commemoration and celebration of God’s reforming grace and love’.
